Up next for Montserrat in Caribbean Cup qualifying are the
non-FIFA affiliated Martinique on Friday 7th, hosts for this first
round group stage. Being an overseas
territory of France, Martinique are not an official FIFA country so this match
will not affect Montserrat’s world ranking, even were they to give their hosts
a beating. Quite how this differs from
Montserrat being a dependent territory of the UK I don’t really know, but in
FIFA land it seems to matter.
However, the chances of that are slimmer than an anorexic,
since Martinique’s population is around 70 times greater than that of
Montserrat. They can also call on the
likes of former top league player in France and England Frederic Piquionne,
which all suggests only one likely outcome on Friday.
This will be a first meeting between these two sides, and as
much as I’d like to suggest hope for Montserrat, frankly there is none. Or I’ll eat my hat. However, it will be interesting to compare
the weight of Montserrat’s likely defeat to that suffered by the British Virgin
Islands in the opening match. They fell
16-0, so please Montserrat, keep the score to less than that.
